Holy Manna
This tune, from the "Southern Harmony", is the traditional "warm up" song for many shape note singing communities.
In the shape note tradition, singers gather, often from miles around, for all-day singing and picnic on the church grounds. They sit in a hollow square, facing the center, grouped by parts, and take turns leading the singing. Our hymnal sets two texts to this tune, "Blessed feasts of blessed martyrs" (#238) and "God who stretched the spangled heavens" (#580).
